POLLUTION, CHLORINE AND SUN... OH MY!

My next little "adventure" is quickly approaching... IRON GIRL at Lake Lanier.  Yikes!  Well, as you can imagine, swimming has left my hair and skin extremely dry!!  I've also upped my running and am spending a lot more time outside.  Wind, pollution, sun and pool chemicals are taking a toll!  We have been out of  "Mama's lotion" (as Emory calls it) so tonight I made more homemade lotion.  Side note: My son, Emory, has eczema and this "stuff" is the only "stuff" that seems to work.  All ingredients are: organic, unrefined, cold or expeller pressed and/or extra virgin.  Remember: your skin is your largest organ.  Rub some garlic on your foot and soon you can taste it in your mouth!

It's amazing how expensive it is to buy organic/all natural products!  And... it's AMAZING how EASY it is to make products yourself.  One of my favorite parts is that we reuse the containers when they are empty, conserving plastic and/or glass.  We make our own: lotion, chap stick (SERIOUSLY THE BEST CHAP STICK EVER), lip gloss, sunscreen, and deodorant (for Avery, when she works out, she is 9).  Now, I must say, we do what we can where we can.  There are plenty of store bought toxic containing products all over this house (although, I try to avoid parabens).  I feel, with all the toxins floating around everywhere, homemade products are an area where I can try and  immerse my kids in something good.  BONUS: all 3 kids love to help create homemade products!

I change the recipe every time I make a batch and love how fun it is to play around with the ingredients.  Mountain Rose Herbs is my favorite place to get high quality supplies!

~~~EV'S SKIN RECOVERY LOTION~~~
I GET MY SUPPLIES FROM: MOUNTAIN ROSE HERBS
On low, melt in a small pot:
1/2 C Shea butter, organic (option, 1/2  cocoa butter, 1/2 Shea)
1/2 C Carrier oil.  I use a blend of: 1/4 C Kukui Nut oil (for aging skin- that's me!), and 1/4 C of: sweet almond oil, avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, or jojoba...
1/2 C Coconut oil, organic extra virgin, cold pressed, unrefined  NUTIVA is my favorite
1/2 C Beeswax
1 t 100% ARGAN OIL
~After everything has slowly melted, remove from the stove and gently pour the liquid into a small mason jar or plastic jars (that have a lid).  Let the jars sit, uncovered, overnight.  Skin Recovery will turn white when it is cooled.
NOTES:
~Use different oils, depending on your specific needs
~For thinner consistency, whisk in: 1 cup of homemade organic hot tea, plus 1/4 cup emulsifying wax
~I add organic lavender and chamomile tea bags to the warm oil, and let steep.
~After it is made, if the lotion is becomes too hard, stir up with a butter knife to soften or leave in a warm place.
~Smooth on after bathing and before bed
OPTION: Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, my favorites are: Ylang Ylang, Myrrh, Bergamot, Geranium, Sweet Orange, Eucalyptus and Rosemary mixed with Spearmint .  For Emory's sensitive skin I leave this step out, but the girls really enjoy picking out their own scent.
FOR FACE TREATMENT: I put a bit of recovery lotion in my hand and add a couple drops of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar and water mix (I mix up and keep in bathroom).  Rub on face for deep conditioning face butter.
~~~THE SUN, "The light of life"~~~
UP TO AN HOUR A DAY IS BENEFICIAL
VITAMIN D IS ESSENTIAL FOR GOOD HEALTH
IT HAS THE POWER TO HEAL YOU WHEN YOU ARE SICK
IT PROTECTS YOU FROM CANCER AND DISEASE
SUN: GOOD. BURN: BAD. TOXIC CHEMICALS ON YOUR BODY: VERY BAD
Astaxanthin (along with other powerful antioxidants such as: spirulina, chlorella, blueberries, strawberries, beets, oregano...) will boost your natural resistance to sunburns and minimize harmful effects of overexposure.

~HOMEMADE SUNBLOCK~
1/2 C Coconut oil, organic extra virgin, cold pressed, unrefined
1/4 C Shea butter
1/4 C Cocoa butter, aloe vera or jojoba
2 t Vitamin E
1 T LARGE PARTICLE (not nanoparticles) zinc oxide, wear a mask when handling because it is dangerous in powder form.  Be very careful and do not inhale!
1 T Emulsifying wax
1/2 C Water

Warm. Stir. Store.

Last year, I bought a tube of all natural Burt's Bees diaper cream (which has Zinc Oxide in it, and mixed 1/2 of it with 1 cup of extra virgin, unrefined, coconut oil).

If you start getting burned, don't add more toxins to your already hurting skin... get out of the sun because your body has had enough.

Peace!
